Thomas E. Mellon, Jr. is the founding partner of Mellon, Webster & Shelly, a law firm located in Doylestown in suburban Philadelphia. Consistently selected as a “Super Lawyer” and “Preeminent Attorney” by national societies, the law firm has been repeatedly recognized as “prestigious” by the local media. Both Mr. Mellon and Mellon, Webster & Shelly have been recognized as being of the highest caliber in ethics and professional performance. Mr. Mellon received a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Joseph's University, 1969, in Philadelphia and his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center, 1972, in Washington, DC. In 1974, Mr. Mellon also earned a Master of Law degree from Harvard Law School and will be awarded a Master Degree of Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009.
Mr. Mellon, after completing a clerkship in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit with the Honorable William H. Hastie, was an instructor at Suffolk University School of Law where he taught two classes: "Legal Research and Analysis" and "The Art of Negotiations." Mr. Mellon spent seven years in the United States Attorney's Office, United States Department of Justice, in Philadelphia where he quickly rose to the positions of Chief, Narcotics Unit and Chief, Criminal Division. Mr. Mellon was honored as a recipient of The Outstanding United States Attorney Award from the Attorney General of the United States, 1980. Similar honorariums were awarded Mr. Mellon by several federal agencies during his service in the Department of Justice.
Mr. Mellon, for almost thirty years, has been in private practice in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He has represented plaintiffs throughout the United States in federal and state courts. Mr. Mellon’s practice focuses on the representation of individuals involved in personal injury actions and complex commercial litigation. He has achieved successful awards and settlements for clients in both class actions and individual suits. In 1994, Mr. Mellon became a leader in the fight against American tobacco companies; he continues to litigate against tobacco companies in the State of Florida. In addition, Mr. Mellon has represented clients in suits against Fortune 500 companies including, but not limited to, automotive corporations, major pharmaceutical manufacturers, major medical corporations and institutions, banking and the oil industry. Mr. Mellon is lead counsel among a national consortium of attorneys who have been retained by many 9/11 families to pursue an investigation into the involvement of Iran/al-Qa’eda which was prompted by the 9/11 Commission’s Report, July 2004. Mr. Mellon has been selected by federal courts to participate in multi-district litigation committees and in one capacity is presently serving as National Liaison Counsel. Mr. Mellon has lectured throughout the country before bar associations and universities.
Mr. Mellon has also been a leader in the trial bar, politics and the community. He is past President of the Bucks County Bar Association, having previously served as the Association's Treasurer and as a member of its Board of Directors. Mr. Mellon has also held the office of President of the Bucks County Legal Aid Society. He has served as counsel to, and Chairman of, the Democratic Party of Bucks County and as well as being a member of the State Democratic Committee. In 1992, Mr. Mellon served as one of the Political Directors of the Clinton-Gore campaign in Pennsylvania.
Mr. Mellon arranged for the first group of American lawyers to visit Havana, Cuba in 1999. The week-long visit was with Cuban and American government officials, judges and court personnel, bar association officers, political dissidence and finally the Supreme Court of Cuba. Mr. Mellon is serving on the Board of Directors of the Bucks Mont Katrina Relief Project which has raised millions of dollars for the victims of Hurricane Katrina in Hancock County, Mississippi. Mr. Mellon has led over one hundred attorneys and their family members on multiple trips to Hancock County to clean up the devastation, rebuild homes and assist in the construction of new community buildings such as the food pantry and animal center.
Mr. Mellon’s cases have been mentioned in national publications including The New York Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek and The Washington Post and local publications and newspapers such as The Philadelphia Inquirer. The firm’s cases have also been the subject of many television and radio interviews including The Today Show, Good Morning America, 20/20, NBC, ABC and CBS evening news. For over a year, Mr. Mellon served as a nightly commentator on local television stations during the celebrated OJ Simpson trial. Finally, Mr. Mellon’s cases have been the subject of at least five books including Cape May Courthouse by Lawrence Schiller, The Last Dive by Bernie Chowdhury, Cornered by Peter Pringle, Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson and The Lizard King by Bryan Christy. Mr. Mellon is married to Sara Webster, also a Super Lawyer for Pennsylvania, and is the father of four sons: Thomas, Christopher, Ryan and Henry.
